Childcare - Under Development
The pre-existing site consisted of two private residences and a dilapidated church. Co-lab approached the design of the new childcare by extracting the roof form of the church and translating it onto the other existing buildings in order to maintain cohesiveness throughout the space. This methodology negated the need to demolish three buildings and rebuild an entire centre, instead, it enabled Co-lab to strip back the structures and utilise their unique attributes to inform the new design.
Round cut-outs in the timber facade and fence line allow for interaction between internal and external spaces as well as increased solar access throughout the interior spaces. A tiered, multiple level playground is facilitated by the sloping site, providing several isolated play areas that are intertwined through bridging structures such as slides, stairs and fence cut-outs.
